Lobster for Lunch Again??

Before the middle of the 1800's, many people felt that lobsters were a poor man's food. Children who were given lobster for school lunches were laughed at by their classmates for eating such a lowly meal.

Return of the Claw
A Lobster's two claws are each designed for a separate purpose. The biggest claw, called the crusher, is designed for defence, while the smaller claw, called the cutter, is used for eating. If a lobster ever loses its crusher claw in a fight or an accident, the remaining cutter claw will quickly grow and change into a new crusher. This is so the lobster can defend itself while the missing claw slowly grows back.

Showing Their Age
You can determine the age of any bivalve mollusc, like scallops or mussels, by counting the rings on its shell.

What a Catch!
On February 11, 1977, a Nova Scotia fisherman caught the largest lobster ever found. It weighed 44lbs. 6oz. And measured 3ft 6in. from the tail fan to the tip of the largest claw.

Lobsters were once so abundant along the shores of NS that farmers used them as fertilizer on their fields.



How to eat a lobster!

1. Twist off the claws. Seperate the pieces of the front claws at each of the joints. 2. Crack the claws and claw pieces with the nutcrackers. Use the pick as needed.
3. Seperate the tail from the body with a twisting motion. 4. Break the tail flippers from the tail.
5. Using a fork or your finger, force the tail meat up and out of the other end. Beneath the outer top layer of meat is the digestive tract which should not be eaten. Remove the meat covering from this tract and discard the tract. The outer meat may be eaten. 6. Unhinge the body shell from the body. Remove the "tomalley" (green substance) which is actually the lobster's liver.
7. Remove the smaller claws from the body. There is meat in the body at the points where each claw was attached. 8. There is some delicate meat in the smaller claws. This can be obtained by breaking apart the claw sections and squeezing out the meat with one's teeth.
